Organizations that are implementing enterprise resource planning (ERP) software need to be reminded of the need to ensure their staff receive adequate training.
Jane Reiner, a principal consultant at Procon Management Services, a management consulting company, stated that a lack of good-quality training when introducing an ERP system can create chaos. At a minimum, users should be exposed to both eLearning and classroom learning in a sandbox environment before going live.
Most untrained users only utilize a small percentage of an ERP solution’s capabilities. She warned against simply assuming that workers will be able to learn how to use the software as they go along, as this will make it difficult to learn all of the shortcuts and problem-solving techniques necessary to get the most out it. While learning, users may be able to modify procedures such that they take full advantage of system capabilities.
As such, Ms Reiner stated that companies with existing ERP solutions that “do not cut it” should look to hire strong, experienced trainers. For newer implementations, it is imperative to provide guidance sessions prior to going live, as well as offering instructional documentation & ongoing support..
